In the world’s most northern town there are no trees. There’s no agriculture, a fact reflected in the limited produce selection at the sole grocery store. Polar night lasts from November to February, plunging everything into 24-hour darkness. But one crisp February morning, the sun’s rays return, shining above the horizon line for the first time in months. Daylight lasts for only an hour and a half; the next day the light lasts nearly twice as long. Each following day gains about half an hour of light, and every possible blue emerges—indigo, cerulean, azure, sapphire, periwinkle— finally lightening the sky to the color of ice.  (text by Bridget Batch)
